1500 FISH NETS, 30 BOATS BURNT IN KASESE
BY JOEL KAGGUTA
IN KASESE—
At least 1500 illegal fishing nets and 30 boats were today burnt by
the local leadership at Kahendero fish landing site in Kasese district
as a mitigation measure to curb down immature fishing at the lake.
The exercise follows the June 2016 resolution by the local and
sub-county authorities to fight against fish depletion believed to
have been reported at Kahendero fishing site.
In April this year, the fishermen banned the use of illegal fishing
gears at Kahendero after going good couples month without having a
bomber catch.
A section of fishermen, however had blamed the president Yoweri Kaguta
Museveni for his directives while on campaign trails to all the
district Fisheries and the Beach Management Unit officials to resign
their duties if tey can’t impound and arrest whoever was dealing in
immature fish.
Earnest Masereka Kasoke, the sub-county chairperson for Muhokya told
the press that the district Fisheries had been informed by his office
about the exercise and that he had been granted permission to preside
over it.
However, the press did not verify the orders.
Asanaiir Mugusu, the sub-county Secretary for Production asked the
fishermen to own the measures because they were the direct
beneficiaries of the campaign.
Mambo Muhamadi, the area local council chairperson said that he was
rest assured that if all the terms and conditions resolved followed,
the situation would be reversed positively.
By press time, the able bodied people at the fish landing site were
still impounding more illegal nets and setting them on fire.
