In Mbarara—
The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Ms. Janat Mukwaya has directed Police in Mbarara to keep close check on the self-proclaimed king of Ankole ;Umar Asiimwe, branding him as an “imposter.”
Mukwaya yesterday summoned self-styled king Asiimwe along with his appointed cabinet at Lake View Hotel in Mbarara and grilled them for hours on how he enthroned himself as head of a kingdom that was banned in the 1960s.

She later told press, “My job tonight was to tell all the people in Ankole that Umar is an imposter. Yes, he was wrongly enthroned and he did not follow the law.
“They are moving under Omugabe mobilizing for the Obugabe. Don’t you see the contradiction? If you are already king, why do you go mobilizing people to support restoration of the Kingdom?”
The minister advised Asiimwe and his people to register with the ministry of Internal Affairs as traditional healers instead of enthroning himself as a king.
“If they want to be healers like the Bachwezi, let them go and register under the ministry of internal affairs as an NGO; if they have that, police and other agencies will not disrupt them but should they continue to have people around them without registering then police will go after them.”
As for the people in Ankole that want Obugabe restored, the minister said these should follow the right procedure set by the Cultural Leaders Act (2011) under article 246(1) that provides the process of installation of a traditional or cultural leader.
“Like our Kabaka, he started as Ssabalangila and later as Ssabataka and finally was crowned as a king. It is a gradual process because if you are reviving something you cannot have everything back at the same time; you must persuade people to support you and the process is there,” she said.
