The civil society organizations (CSOs) advocating for better health implementing partners towards reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS in Ntungamo District have decried over the lack of condoms in HIV hot spot areas that put the people living with HIV/AIDS and general public at risk.
According to the executive director of Katuna Marps an NGO that empowers to seek health services in health facilities targeting people living with HIV/AIDS to curb the spread of the scourge in the Kisoro, Kabale and Ntungamo districts, Kyomugisha Sarah lack of condoms in public places has accelerated the new infection rate in hot spot places of Rubaare and Kafunjo-Mirama town councils.
Kyomugisha made the remarks today while addressing the civil society organizations meeting on information sharing organized by Uganda Red Cross society in conjunction with Advocacy for better health held at Red Cross offices Ntungamo Municipality.
She is calling upon duty bearers and district officials to always fill the condom boxes which were hanged in public places such hotels, lodges, markets and toilets saying that some people feel shy to ask for condoms hence resorts to have sexual intercourse without them.
However, when contacted the Ntungamo District Health Educator (DHE) Twesigye Nesterio revealed the District has received many condoms but the owners and managers of Hotels and lodges refused to hang free condoms in their places because they have theirs at a fee to their clients.
Twesigye also noted that some clients use lodges for sleeping not for sex and when they found condoms in the rooms they start complaining.
The project manager Advocacy for better health for the Districts of Bushenyi and Ntungamo Baherezibwa Edson challenged district authorities to revamp the collapsed HIV/AIDS coordinating committees at all levels in order to plan and allocate funds in the district budget for HIV services.
