Former FDC party president Rtd Col.Dr Kiiza Besigye has cautioned the residents of Rukungiri not to swap their national identity cards for money as they get closer to polls to elect the district woman member of parliament in this bye-election.
Intensifying vote hunt for Betty Bamukwasa Muzanira the FDC party flag bearer Besigye four time presidential contestant said that such a transaction shall deny them the opportunity to participate in the election on 31st may.
Besigye who also asked voters not to be intimidated by security personnel, encouraged voters to accept and receive the money given to them by NRM officials saying its part of the tax they pay to government.
However, the intimidation claims were refuted by the area RDC Martin Mugabe who said that the role of security in this by-election is to protect people and their property and promised to apprehend any body found bribing voters.
Kampala lord mayor Elias Lukwago said Jim Muhwezi the former Rujumbura MP and commissioner of prisons John Byabashaija are some of the people bribing voters in the district and implored each voter to spy on the other so as to close any gap that may lead to rigging of elections.
Meanwhile, Betty Bamukwasa Muzanira, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate in the Rukungiri District Woman MP race has petitioned the Inspector General of Government and the Electoral Commission Chairperson over what she calls illegal involvement by civil servants in partisan campaigns in the by-election.
Muzanira through her lawyers of Rwakafuuzi and Company Advocates wrote to the IGG Irene Mulyagonja, to report a number of civil servants including soldiers, who she said are campaigning for the NRM candidate Winfred Matsiko.
Among these she cited Dr. Johnson Byabashaija the Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons who she says has been campaigning in Nyakishenyi Sub County for the NRM candidate.
