Former Mbarara Municipality Mayor Robert Bakira Rutehenda a.k.a Bonga has passed-on.
The prominent figure breathed his last on Friday Morning at Nakasero Hospital, Kampala where he had been admitted for a week. He succumbed to Broncho pneumonia according to close family members.
Rutehenda hails from Nyakigando village in Ibanda municipal,Ibanda district.
Born 11th November 1942 to late Edward and Keroyi Rutehenda, the deceased, who was christened “Bonga,” is remembered for his 15 year service as Mayor of Mbarara since 1989 and also Chairman of the NRM in Ibanda district.
In his old age, Rtehenda also served among others as the Head of Laity at Nyabuhikye Archdeaconry in Northwest Ankole diocese, was a finance committee member both archdeaconry and diocese, chairman board of governors Muko Vocational Institute; board member at Ibanda Kibubura integrated primary school and member of Ibanda District Farmers Association.
An active member of the NRA struggle that brought the NRM government to power, the deceased is also remembered as a seasoned and passionate farmer.
His brother Murari tells us, on the advice of their father, Rutehenda left High School to go farming at Kyibega Ranch in Nyabushozi in present day Kiruhura district.
He later went to Netherlands where he studied more about farming before joining politics.
In Dec. 1972, he married his wife Victor Rutehenda and they have produced 7 (seven) children.
The Nyabuhikye archdeaconry Rev. Can. Yorokamu Mwesigwa, said that Rutehenda who attended the meeting last week complained that was too weak after developing some complications in the chest. He was rushed to St. Luke medical centre before being referred to Nakasero hospital,Kampala where he passed on.
The Bishop of North West Ankole, Rt. Amos Magezi has expressed shock about untimely death of Can. Robert Bakira Rutehenda who has been a church pillar for many years.
