MUSEVENI TO GIVE MPS ARMY SHARP SHOOTERS TO BOOST THEIR SECURITY

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the Minister of Finance, Matia Kasaija to immediately acquire a fleet of new 4-wheel drive pick-ups with open carriage beds to tighten the security of Members of Parliament.

The President’s decision follows meetings held with the legislators to discuss the security of Ugandans and lawmakers following the gruesome murder of former Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga and his brother Saidi Kongo.

In the letter that the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga made mention of during Wednesday’s plenary session, the President emphasized that all his current interventions follow his decision to directly monitor the security of Ugandans following the murder of AIGP Felix Kaweesi last year.

“I decided to intervene and order the up-grading of the technological base of the Police Force; this up-grading and our general defense doctrine were contained in my 12 points plan of my speech to Parliament on the 20th of June, 2018,” the letter reads in part.

Museveni said that he realized that the measures were long term and may take months to be put in place yet MPs have increasingly received several threats and intimidations of possible attacks thus priotising the security for MPs.

The MPs already have some Police guards but will be added with sharp-shooters and follow pick-ups according to the President.

“I will however add two other elements, the sharp-shooters of the army and follow pick-ups that will be used by these sharp-shooters. The pick-ups will be protected in simple ways against small arms bullets.”

“I can assure you, they will not be interesting targets for terrorists using Kalashinikovs, the sharp shooters themselves should get personal body armour and helmets that are bullet resistant, even the other police guards should also get body protection.”

He however concluded with an acknowledgement that this exercise of individualising security details is a ‘waste of resources, financial and man power’ and the state will do away with it when the systems are installed before going ahead to re affirm that the Minister should act fast while executing this.

The question now remains on when the Minister will be implementing this and if he will use borrowed money as this was not allocated for in the National budget.
