IN MBARARA—-
Mbarara Regional referral Hospital staff has decried lack of space which they say has frustrated service delivery at this facility.
Dr Moses Kayondo, the head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at this hospital said they deliver over 700 women every month, while the post natal department has 35 beds, the Labor ward three beds and gynecology department only 14 beds forcing most of their clients to be attended on the floor.
He raised the concern last evening during a function held at the hospital’s maternity ward to recognize Obstetrics and Gynecology staff for dedicated service.
The department emerged the best in service delivery in the whole country at a National health Assembly held in Kampala in November last year.
While commenting on the challenge of inadequate space, Dr Celestine Barigye, the Hospital’s Executive Director said they are plans to expand the wards as they continue to lobby government to upgrade this hospital into a national hospital and get better infrastructure.
He revealed that they have had engagements with the ministry of health and the President to put it clear to them that this hospital that started in 1930 serving Ankole region is now a referral and other district hospital feed it with patients like Kabale, Masaka, Fortportal and Hoima Kitagata besides serving neighboring countries of DR Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania.
The hospital receives between 380 and 420 patients daily.
