Students from faculty of science at Mbarara University of Science And Technology (MUST) have today (Wednesday) stormed the offices of Mbarara City Resident City Commissioner Lt. Col. James Mwesigye over 156 million UGX unpaid school practice Allowances.
Musa Narugoda the president faculty of Sciences at MUST told www.mknewslink.com reporter that they have been in the field for the last five weeks from the 31st.January, 2022 and have been using their own money though they are entitled to funds from Government.
He added that Government students are entitled to 400,000 shillings while the private students are supposed to get 300.000 shillings which they have both not received for five weeks now.
Narugoda noted that they staged the protest after most of them started starving from their hostels since they don’t have money to get food and pay rent.
Isaac Mwebembezi a third year student told www.mknewslink.com reporter that they struggled with rent and food during their school practice after the university administration promised to clear their school allowances within the shortest time but till now.
Contacted by www.mknewslink.com on the matter, Dr. Peace Mbabazi the administrator Faculty of Science at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) revealed that Government has delayed to release the said funds but she is optimistic that through the office of the RCC Mbarara the Government will intervene.
However Lt. Col. James Mwesigye the RCC Mbarara city assured the students to take up the matter with the University administration so that they push the Ministry of finance to release the students’ allowances.
