In Hoima—
6 people have today morning perished in an accident after a vehicle reg. no. UAT 096V on Monday evening lost control and nearly plucked into Waaki river in Bineneza village Nyantonzi sub county at the border of Masindi and Hoima district.
According to eye witnesses, the incident happened at around 6pm on Monday as the FUSO ferried sugarcane cutters from Kisebegwa village Kyabigambire subcounty in Hoima to Masindi district.
Sunday Eyotu the chairperson Nyantonzi subcounty Masindi district told www.mknewslink.com that the Fuso lorry failed as the driver was approaching the bridge forcing him to abandon the vehicle.
The chairperson attributed the accident to the poor state of the vehicle and condemned the driver for overloading.
The police officer attached to Katanga Police Post in Nyantonzi Police Post who chose to be anonymous told our reporter that they had retrieved several people from the river including the dead while several were yet to be retrieved.
According to one page press statement released by Kinyara Sugar Limited dated 16th August 2021, the truck registration number UAT 096V belongs to their service provider.
Richard Wanok the communications manager Kinyara Sugar Limited told our reporter that the vehicle was carrying a yet unspecified number of laborers employed by their service provider.
“It’s reported that five people died on spot, one died on way to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, and the injured are still getting medical treatment at the same hospital,” Wanok added.
Efforts to get a comment from ASP Julius Hakiza the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson was futile by press time since he didn’t respond to our repeated phone calls.
