The bickering between Kabarole district leaders and Fort Portal regional hospital administrators that lasted for over five months has ended following a harmonious meeting between two parties.
The row started on 11th May, 2018 when the district council resolved to petition the Health Minister of health demanding the transfer of the Hospital director Dr. Florence Tugumisirize.
The leaders accused the director of her failure to work with the local leaders, failing to attend district council and report on the hospital performance, denying opportunity the intern students practicing from the health facility, transfers caused internally, declining standards of the facility and the arrest of councilors who were on monitoring mission.
During the district stakeholders’ meeting held at the hospital on Tuesday the hospital director accepted to organize quarterly meetings with the district, monitor jointly and report on the hospital performance to district to bridge the gap of poor communication.
She noted that the negative perception about the health facility was due to lack of public relations and security which she admits will be improved after meeting.
On the death of mothers at the facility, Dr. Tugumisirize attributed it to the late referrals by the low health facilities especially from Rwamwanja in Kamwenge and Kyegegwa noting that patients arrive at the hospital when they are in critical conditions.
Last year, in a quarter of July -December, 33 mothers who were referred at the hospital died and of these 11 were from Kabarole.
Richard Rwabuhinga the Kabarole district chairperson observed that the past six months were characterized by chaos at the hospital because of the lack of clear channels of coordination and communication between the director and the leaders. He told the staff that they all serving the population with a clear objective of quality service and asked the director to always attended council and present reports about the facility.
RDC Asiimwe Stephen observed the need for the hospital administrators to engage the local leaders of Rwamwanja Refugee camp and Kyegegwa on the dangers of late referrals because death impacts negatively on the hospital performance.
The meeting that was attended by the RDC , DHO Dr.Richard Mugahi and the hospital administrators resolved to end the bickering , focus on serving the public and introduce name tags for staff for easy identification of workers purportedly selling drugs and extorting money from patients.
It also resolved that the stakeholders sensitize the people on the cases of illnesses referred to referral hospital and start utilizing the lower health center IIs,IIIs and IVs to avoid congesting the referral hospital.
