The Chief Magistrates Court in Mbarara has granted bail to Doreen Atwongyirwe, a lecturer at Bishop Stuart University, who faces charges of causing grievous harm to her maid.
Atwongyirwe, a resident of Katete Central Cell, was arrested earlier this month and charged under Section 199(a) of the Penal Code Act. She has been held in remand at Mbarara Main Prison for the past week.
According to court documents, on september 25, 2024, Atwongyirwe allegedly poured hot water on her maid, Racheal Ninsiima, with the intent to cause serious bodily harm. The incident occurred in Katete Central Cell and resulted in significant injuries to Ninsiima.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Andrew Kabombo on Wednesday, Atwongyirwe was granted a cash bail of UGX 1.5 million. Her three sureties were also given a non-cash bond of UGX 10 million each.
In his ruling, Magistrate Kabombo highlighted that the victim, Reachel Ninsiima, had requested Atwongyirwe’s release on bail so that she could continue funding her medical treatment, following Atwongyirwe’s agreement to offer financial support for her care.
The case has been adjourned to December 3, 2024, when the hearing will commence.
