North Kigezi and Kinkizi Anglican Dioceses have commissioned a 11.2 kilometres gravity flow scheme to provide water to more than 6,000 people in Kempungu, Kashenyi, Rushoroza, Kijondo,Byarugambwa cells in Buhunga sub- county Rukungiri district.
The 500M shillings Buhunga gravity flow scheme was constructed by North Kigezi diocese together with the diocese of Kinkizi with funding from Tear fund organization, a United Kingdom funding agency based in England.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the project, Rt. Rev. Benon Magezi of North Kigezi diocese advised locals that as much as water is life, it can easily become infectious if not maintained well.
Bishop Magezi also asked the beneficiaries to desist from the habit of
planting trees in wet lands but instead protect them since they are
sources of water.
Bishop Dan Zoreka of Kinkiizi diocese encouraged the beneficiaries of the project to use the water for more than common household purposes asking them to use clean containers while fetching water to be free from water bone diseases.
Bishop Zoreka also warned the government officials against imposing taxes on water projects constructed by the church of Uganda saying that this water is purely free of charge therefore no one should pay even a single coin to the government or any other person.
Jolly Matsiko, a 76 old woman, a beneficiary from Rushoroza cell hailed the church of Uganda for thinking about the poor adding that she has been using contaminated water from the community well but it was also far from her home.
It should be remembered that Buhunga sub- county is one of the water stressed sub- counties in Rukungiri district and the sub- county lost over 100 cows as result of water shortage and it was also badly hit by drought last year a thing that left many with no food.
The two Anglican dioceses have constructed over 10 water projects with an intention of providing clean and safe water from human and animal consumption.
