In Rubanda—-
Police in Rubanda district on Monday evening used tear gas to disperse at least 20 supporters of the Rubanda East legislator Henry Musasizi who had blocked Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema, Musasizi’s main rival from accessing a campaign venue.
The vicious supporters who were led by the Bubaare Sub County Chairperson Pius Tumwine put logs and stones in a road that leads to a polling station at St Mark Kashakyi Catholic church in Nyamiyaga parish Bubaare Town Council where Jogo was heading for a rally.
The section started pelting stones to the lead team of Jogo immediately as they approached the venue. In the process, two supporters of Jogo namely, Sarah Ahereza and Moreen Katusiime all residents of Kashakyi village were injured after being hit by stray stones.
Simon Niwagaba who operates a shop at Kashakyi Trading Center told our reporter that the Bubaare Sub County Chairperson Pius Tumwine started organising the group on Sunday, paying them 20,000 shillings each to block Jogo from campaigning at the contested venue.
However, Police from Bubaare Police post commanded by the post’s Officer in Charge ASP Moses Patho, immediately intervened and fired tear gas to the violent Musasizi supporters who then ran and freed the scene giving a go ahead to Jogo and team to continue and carry out the rally at the designed venue.
Patho said that they have already started investigations into the matter to establish whoever was behind the move so that they are arrested and face the law.
Campaigning later at Kashakyi polling station, Jogo condemned the attack on them by Musasizi supporters and called for harmony and unity among voters essential for the development of their area .
