Most Catholics in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality have boycotted
Valentine’s Day to join the rest of the world to commemorate Ash
Wednesday.
Yesterday was the first time in 73 years that Valentine’s Day falling on the Ash Wednesday.
On February 14, many Christians face a dilemma as they try to
reconcile their faith with the traditional celebrations of romantic
love.
Episcopal Vicar Pascal Betungura who presided over the mass at St.
Kagwa catholic parish in Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality said the ash
smearing is a reminder that people are made from dust, and to dust they
shall return.
Betungura notes that the three traditional activities associated with
the season of lent are alms giving, prayer and fasting.
He emphasizes that the issue of fasting during lent is not about
putting up a show but rather than helping Christians transform internally.
As regards to which people should be fasting Betungura said it is all
Christians whether one is rich or poor, political leader or civic
leader so long as they are between 16 and 60 years of age.
