The suspect has been i identified as Patrick Mujuni 37 years old from Kijunjubwa cell in Kijunjubwa town council Masindi district .
,speaking to mk news Link , Paul Tinkamanyire the brother to the deceased, explained that he was informed in the morning by the the Officer in Charge of criminal investigations department Simon Peter Ochiti how his relative had died.
Tinkamanyire added that Mujuni who was operating a small bar and a butcher was arrested on Sunday last week by the officer in Charge Kijunjubwa Police post Peter Lokinomoi.
According to Tinkamanyire, his brother Mujuni had picked a misunderstanding with a customer over money which resulted into a fight.
“Police led by OC Lokinomoi intervened but what’s paining me is the OC beating my brother. The information I am getting is he was seriously beaten by the police officer and his death could have resulted from that. The customer he fought with claimed that he had lost sh1M which was also a lie” Tinkamanyire added.
He added that Mujuni had been charged with robbery and assault noting that they tried to pursue for the police bond in vain.
“When we tried to secure a police bond, we were told that his offence couldn’t be bonded. We pleaded with the OC Kijunjubwa police post to transfer him to Masindi central police police station but they kept on confusing us. It was yesterday (Wednesday ) when he was transferred here but he wasn’t in a good condition,” he added.
Speaking about the same matter, Paddy Muhumuza, a friend to the deceased explained to Mk News Linkb that even yesterday they visited Mujuni at Masindi police station and asked for the police bond in vain.
“When we visited him yesterday at Masindi central police station he looked weak and he was complaining of some pain,” he added.
“What has pained me most is to be told that his death resulted from the fight he was having with his colleagues in the cells. We need the Police Standard Unit, Human Rights organisation to intervene such that we are able to get justice,” Muhumuza appealed.
When we reached Julius Allan Hakiza the Albertine region police spokesperson confirmed that Mujuni had died in cells, adding that he is suspected to have committed suicide.
“I haven’t got the particulars but we suspect him to have committed suicide,” said Hakiza.
By the time of filing the story, Mujuni’s body had been taken to Masindi government hospital for postmortem.
