CHIMPANZEE INJURES THREE PEOPLE IN MASINDI DISTRICT

Three people including a one year girl were injured by a chimpanzee in Kyempunu village, BudongoSub County Masindi district.
The three who could not be identified by press time, were injured by a chimp yesterday evening when they had gone to collect firewood from Rwensama forest along Masindi _Biiso road in Budongo sub-county.
A resident of the area Mildred Tibananuka told www.mknewslink.com that the chimp came from behind unidentified mother who was breastfeeding a one year girl and grabbed the child from her.
The chairperson LC1 Kyempunu village Simon Kundi confirmed the reports saying that the incident happened at midday. He said women came from the neighboring village of Bwinamira 3.
Kundi said that the chimp grabbed the child from its mother who made an alarm which attracted other women who rescued the girl adding that the mother and another woman were injured as they fought with the chimp.
He said after other people sounded the alarm the chimp dropped the child after injuring it.
Kundi said that the child was seriously injured whereas its mother and the second woman sustained minor injuries.
He said the child was rushed to Kinyara health 3 from where it was referred to Masindi Kitara medical center in Masindi town.
The officer in charge Kabango police station Kenneth Kasiita confirmed the reports but could not give details about it saying he was not at the station when the incident happened.
Reports of chimps injuring people mainly children are common in areas neighboring forests and national parks in Uganda.
