The Government is in its final stages of formulating a policy that is meant to regulate the churches and their practices.
Through the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity, the Office of the President, has embarked on the development of a national policy on religious and faith-based organizations to foster a more healthy relationship with government and other stakeholders.
Speaking to journalists, Director of Religious Affairs at Directorate of ethics and Integrity in the office of the president, Rev Aaron Mwesigye, said the policy seeks to provide a legal framework to combat wrong elements, corruption, and immorality and seek for accountability from church.
Rev. Mwesigye noted that the new policy seeks to establish neutral committees at all levels comprising both government and religious representatives to act as a watchdog between stakeholders.
He said that there are many mushrooming churches which are not known by government saying that some are stealing from their followers in disguise of prayers and church offertories.
Recently the Bishop of Daystar Cathedral in Mbarara Nathan Ibrahim Turyamureeba also came out and challenged all pastors that are involved in any kind of immoral behavior especially the escalating kidnap cases to stop it and repent of their sins.
He noted that immoral cases have painted a very bad image of the church of Christ and it’s upon the pastors and other religious leaders to clear this bad image.
