The former presidential candidate col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye was this morning granted bail from Luzira where he has been held for over 2 months.
Justice Musalu Musene granted him bail on grounds that Besigye has never jumped bail and he presented credible surities who included Nandala Mafabi the secretary general of FDC, Major Gen. Mugisha Muntu the FDC party president, Rowland Mugume Kaginda MP Rukungiri Municipality and Joyce Nabbosa Sebugwawo mayor Rubaga Division.
Besigye was granted a non cash bail of100 million and as well 100million non cash bail for all the sureties.
Yesterday prosecution led by Brian Karinaki and Florence AKello told court that the release of Besigye who is on treason charges might interfere with investigations for he has much influence in the country.
However justice Musene quashed what the prosecutors claimed but instead granted Besigye bail.
The court room at high court was fully packed with international community, FDC supporters, journalists both local and international to witness the release of Besigye.
Besigye was ordered by court to report at high court every two weeks.
This is the second case of treason that Col. Besigye is charged with. In 2005, he was charged with treason and shortly after hearing started, government withdrew the charge.
