Retired Col.Jack Buhuuku Mucunguzi was on Wednesday 21st June 2023 laid to rest at his country home in Rwenjeru cell , Biharwe ward , Mbarara city North division.
Hundreds of government dignitaries and thousands of locals attended the burial.
In his message which was read by, Gen.Edward Katumba Wamala, President Museveni said the country has lost a freedom fighter and a national hero in the late Jack because he was one of the 27 fighters who attacked Kabamba with him through his inspirations
He Said the fruits of the deceased’s work will remain to benefit the future generations.
Mucunguzi who is survived by four children described him as a loyal friend,a committed and dedicated person.
Maj.Gen.Joram Mugume eulogized Mucunguzi as a Patriotic fellow who loved his country and started his sacrifice to liberate the country in 1978 with the fight against Amini under the Front for National Salvation (FRONASA) movement commanded by Museveni to overthrow the government of Idi Amini.
Harriet Mucunguzi, the deceased’s husband described him as a man of generosity with family being at the core of his being.
Aged 66, the ex-NRA combatant died from liver Cancer in Italy on Sunday 18th, June.
Col.Mucunguzi was one of the few surviving original members of the 27 NRA rebels who attacked Kabamba barracks and he also commanded Section 4 of the nucleus of NRA.
Born in 1958, in Kitojo, Rukungiri, Col.Jack Buhuuku Mucunguzi attended his primary at Katebo Primary School and Rushozi Primary School,and later Joined Mbarara High School for his secondary levels Col.Jack Mucunguzi joined the struggle after his training at Ntare in 1979 shortly after Amini was overthrown.
Mucunguzi’s death comes less than a year after the death of yet another decorated bush war pioneer fighter,Gen.Wilson Tumwine in August last year, leaving only seven of the 27 alive.
They are President Museveni, President Kagame of Rwanda, Julius Kihande,Brig.Fred Mwesigye,Brig.Andrew Lutaya,Col.George Mwesigwa,and Charles Tusiime Rutarago.
