CONGOLESE FISHERMEN ATTACK UGANDANS ON L.EDWARD
By Barak Tukashaba
In Rukungiri.
There is an outbreak of remarkable disputes at Rwenshama landing site
on Lake Edward in Rukungiri district between Ugandan fishermen and their Congolese counterparts.
Lake Edward is shared by Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ugandan fishermen accuse their Congolese counterparts of attacking
them, stealing their fishing gears such and fish on Ugandan side.
The fishermen also blame the Rwenshama landing site management
committee for being quite on the matter when their fishing gears are
being stolen by Congolese nationals an act that has made the situation out of control at the landing site.
Ugandan fishermen say that they have always conveyed meetings with
their congolese counterparts but nothing has been done to end the impasse thus calling their district leaders to intervene before the situation runs out of hands.
However the Rwenshama landing site management committee vice chair
person Twinobusingye says as the committee they have always handled the matters amicably.
Twinobusingye says that for them it is hard to go to Congo and meet
the Congolese fishermen because for them they don’t have government.
