A 30 year old Congolese suspect has died in cells at Kisoro Police
station in Kisoro district.
The deceased has been identified as Rafael Muromba a resident of
Kabuga-Mpiimpi village in Busanza,Rutshuru Territory North Kivu
province of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Muromba died yesterday at around 06:00am in the morning. Muromba had
been arrested on 04th June 2017 from Nteko parish, Nyabwishenya sub
county Kisoro district, on charges of aggravated robbery.
Muromba together with others who took off was arrested by patrol of
Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) patrol attached to Bunyangaro
Army detach after they were found robbing homes in Nteko. He was
detained at Nteko police-post and later transferred to Kisoro Police
station for further management.
Charles Okoto, the Kisoro District Police Commander says that on
arriving at the counter, Muromba started complaining of stomachache.
Okoto says that immediately the deceased was rushed to Kisoro police
health unit and admitted, received necessary treatment.
Okoto says that on Monday evening, Muromba told the police nurse that
he has improved and was taken back to police cells pending
investigations.
His condition however deteriorated in the wee hours of Tuesday at around
05:55am when other suspects heard him breathing abnormally and alerted
police officers on duty for help. Okoto says that the deceased
breathed his last while being rushed back to the police health unit.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region says that the
body of the deceased is still lying at Kisoro Hospital Mortuary as
security operatives in Uganda liaise with their counterparts in
Democratic republic of Congo to take it for a decent burial.
Maate rules out torture saying that postmortem report indicates
that the deceased died of liver cancer.
