The founder of Rise Against Poverty (RAP) Uganda Aaron Ainomugisha has challenged the public and government to support the older persons instead of neglecting them.
Rise Against poverty is an NGO that focuses on eradicating unemployment among the youth through organising seminars that sensitize them to generate business ideas, create their own employment to fight against poverty.
RAP Uganda led by Ainomugisha was yesterday 1st Oct.2020 giving out relief aid including bread, face masks and others items to older people in Rwebikoona old market Kamukuzi Mbarara as the world marked the International Day of Older Persons.
Ainomugisha who doubles as a news anchor, talk show host and head of news department at 91.2 www.croozefm.com Mbarara expressed concern over how older persons have continued to miss out on different programmes especially those from government because of poor information flow and poor representation.
“For us the energetic, we should fight for the older persons and ensure that we have sources of income to enable us take care of them to avoid overburdening them and government,” he added.
Some of the older persons who received relief aid thanked RAP Uganda and called upon the government and other stakeholders to always think about their well-being.
The recent national household survey has shown that there were 1,304,500 older persons in the country (UBOS, 2012),the 2014 Population Census indicated that the older persons were 1,433,305 (UBOS 2016) and this population is projected to reach 5,420,000 by 2050 (UNFPA & HAI, 2012).
The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year. On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991 and this year’s day was commemorated under the theme “Upholding the rights of older persons during COVID-19 pandemic.”
