Rukiga district woman Member of Parliament Caroline Kamusiime has expressed concern over overcrowding in Rukiga Government Prison.
The prison which is meant to accommodate only 15 inmates currently has over 70 prisoners from Rukiga and Rukungiri districts.
Speaking to our reporter at the district head offices, Kamusime said she is not happy with the prisons authorities for making Rukiga prison a Centre of collection for inmates from different districts.
She added that Rukiga district being a new district; they shouldn’t accept prisoners from other districts most especially in these hard times when the country is battling with the Covid 19.
She added it’s absurd to find the same prisoners coming out the facility to do communal work while socializing with the residents.
She promised to sit with the responsible authorities to ensure that this act of bringing prisoners from other districts is halted.
The Resident District Commission who also doubles as the head of the district task force Prekeria Muhindo Mwiine said the whole essence of fighting covid-19 pandemic is social distancing.
She added, it’s so unfortunate that when inmates are inside, they don’t observe S.O.Ps and most of them have come in contact with COVID-19 patients.
She regretted overcrowding and pledged to engage the Prisons bosses.
