The deputy speaker of parliament,Thomas Tayebwa, has urged Ugandans to work together with the government in combating corruption. He emphasized that individuals involved in embezzling public funds come from within our communities.
Tayebwa expressed these sentiments while attending the memorial and prayer service for the late Archbishop Emeritus Paul K. Bakyenga, who passed away on July 18, 2023, at Nyamitanga Cathedral.
Archbishop Emeritus Paul Kamuza Bakyenga passed away at Nsambya Hospital on July 18, 2023, at the age of 79. He had served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Mbarara for 52 years and as Archbishop for 34 years.
Rev. Fr. Severinus Ndugwa, the Vicar General of Mbarara Archdiocese, led the memorial service on Thursday at our Lady of Perpetual Pain, Nyamitanga Cathedral, marking the first anniversary of Archbishop Emeritus Paul Kamuza Bakyenga’s passing. He emphasized that Archbishop Bakyenga’s legacy serves as a continual source of inspiration for Christians, urging them to pursue spiritual excellence. Fr. Ndugwa encouraged Christians to honor the Archbishop’s memory by carrying forward his work and showing compassion to all.
Rosemary Nyakikongoro, the Member of Parliament for Sheema, expressed that when someone passes away, people often tend to forget everything about them and bury their knowledge along with them. She emphasized the importance of coming together to pray for the deceased and reflect on their contributions to the country.
Nyakikongoro highlighted that the late Archbishop emeritus Paul Kamuza Bakyenga was prayerful and deeply respected others, including the government, children, and the elderly. She stressed the significance of continued prayers for him.
Regarding corruption, Nyakikongoro acknowledged that the public must take the lead in combating it, as corrupt individuals originate from within the community. She argued that addressing corruption cannot be solely the responsibility of individuals like President Museveni, the judiciary, or the police, as corruption persists across various institutions. Nyakikongoro emphasized the need for the entire public to be vigilant and actively fight against corruption.
