DOUBLE TRAGEDY:8 CONGOLESE REFUGEES KILEED IN RUBANDA ACCIDENT

Police in Rubanda District are investigating a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of Eight Congolese refugees and injured several others.
The refugees were being transported to the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Kamwenge District when the accident occurred.
The incident happened on November 29, 2024, around 10:10 PM in Kamukirwa Cell, Nyarurambi Ward, Rubanda Town Council, along the Kabale-Kisoro Road.
The reports indicate that the vehicle, a white Toyota HiAce registration number UBK 037K failed to brake while negotiating a sharp corner, plunging approximately 100 meters off the road.
According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, 29 victims were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Kabale Hospital mortuary using a Rubanda COVID-19 emergency response vehicle.
The police suspect the refugees were fleeing to the Rwamwanja camp in Kamwenge District. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, with the vehicle currently impounded at Rubanda Police Station for further examination.
