DRUG ABUSE IN RUBANDA WORRIES LEADERS

Local leaders in Muyanja parish in Bubaare Sub County and Bigungiro parish in Nyamweru sub county Rubanda district are worried about the out-of-control incidences of drug abuse in their areas.
According to social surveys, hundreds of youth are engaged in smoking and abusing drugs and if serious efforts are not taken, the situation may worsen.
The locals say that drug abuse among the youth have become rampant, making teenagers in the area a menace. Most of these young people are reported to be involved in crime mostly theft, robbery, rape and prostitution.
The Muyanja parish Chairman Benson Kaziniro said that they have informed police and sub county leaders for any action in vain. Kaziniro noted the incident in which a 17 year old teenager committed suicide after smoking marijuana. He thus called upon security officials to intervene and apprehend culprits so that they can be punished and rehabilitated
The Nyamweru sub county district councilor, who is also a resident of Bigungiro parish, Sandra Kyomukama said that women no longer move at night for fear of being raped.
She added that they are challenged with their counterparts who notify suspected criminals whenever security officials come to apprehend them.
The Rubanda district Chairman Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema disclosed that they are overwhelmed by the number drug abuse cases in the district, since the district leads in production of drugs especially marijuana. He however said that they embarked on rehabilitating the culprits as a way of reducing on consumption.
