As famine continue to strike different parts of Kisoro district, the LC1 Chairman for Rutoma village in Rubuguri town council has rallied his residents to plant more of Chayote commonly known as Shuusha as an alternative source of food to feed children.
Byaruhanga Aloysius Bahane made this call during a village sensitization meeting at the village house in Rutooma trading centre.
According to Byaruhanga, famine is alarming in Rutoma village and residents are currently feeding mainly on bean leaves commonly known as Ekyishoma while very few have sweet potatoes for supplement.
He noted that the major cause of famine in his village is alcoholism among both men and women and poor farming methods that lead to less production.
He noted that domestic violence cases have also increased in his area due to poverty.
He called upon fathers who do not buy food at home to always not fight their wives for not reserving some food for them while they are drinking alcohol.
Speaking to the voice of Muhabura, the Agriculture officer for Rubuguri town council, Seburiguri Slivern says that production rate of food products is below average at 40% in the whole town council leading to food shortage in most homes.
He advised the locals to desist from growing only trees and tea on a large scale over food for consumption.
He also called for modern types of farming for residents to release more yields.
