FINALLY, AGRICULTURE INSURANCE FOR JULY 2017

IN BUSHENYI—-
Government of Uganda has introduced agriculture insurance to cater for disasters that have been destroying crops and animals in Uganda.
According to the chief executive officer for Keirere green African agency, Mr. Emmanuel Kweyunga, Government has contracted Jublee Insurance to do the job for it.
He added that in turn, Jublee Insurance had given KEGRA agency to do the work in greater Bushenyi.
Kweyunga added that government will pay 50% and 30% for small and large scale farmers respectively and the rest is paid by the farmers.
He noted that his organization will start with only coffee in sept 2017 and then roll out other crops and animals later.
He also said that despite the introduction of agriculture insurance next financial year, farmers are advised to be on the lookout and prevent their crops and animals from any manageable problems.
The money for insurance is already in budget of 2017/2018 financial year to pay 50% and 30% government insurance obligation. Crops covered under this newest venture are; coffee, tea, maize barley, rice, sorghum, beans, fruits, vegetables and cotton. Others are; irish potatoes, livestock and fish.
Disasters to be insured against include; floods, drought, pests, diseases and fire.
