Police in Bushenyi District are investigating a devastating fire that broke out early sunday morning at Nyakabanga Vocational Secondary School in Kyabugimbi Town Council. The blaze, which started around 5:30 a.m., is the second such incident at the school in just one week.
Martial Tumusiime, spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Police, confirmed the incident and stated that students were attending winter studies at the time of the fire. According to police, the fire originated in the boys’ dormitory, destroying beds, mattresses, clothes, metallic cases, books, and other personal belongings, while also causing extensive roof damage.
Last week, on November 4, another fire engulfed the girls’ dormitory, similarly destroying student property.
The school headteacher Bonney Barinyenka noted that this wave of incidents is unprecedented in the school’s history, leading the school management and district security to increase safety measures to protect students and prevent further attacks.
One student sustained serious injuries and has been transferred to Kampala International University Teaching Hospital in Ishaka for treatment.
