In Masindi—
Leaders from Budongo Sub County in Masindi are worried following the laying off of workers by Kinyara sugar limited two weeks back.
Speaking during a budget conference at Budongo sub county headquarters on Monday, Kenneth Kiiza Nyendwoha the Budongo sub county LC3 chairperson noted that the local service tax they have been is going to reduce drastically since most of the local service tax is got from the workers who work at Kinyara sugar limited.
Nyendwoha says that as leaders of Budongo sub county, they are not happy with Kinyaras decision saying that they are wondering to see Kinyara laying off workers at the time it is expanding.
Two weeks back Kinyara sugar limited management laid off close to 200 permanent workers with the aim of downsizing the number of workers something which left many people in Masindi district surprised.
According to the Budongo Sub County Senior Assistant Secretary Abdul Serunjoji, Kinyara sugar limited is one of the lead source of revenue in the Sub County. Serunjiji adds that the laying off of workers is going to affect business in the area since the purchasing power will reduce.
He further noted that as a Sub County, they collected 50 million Ugandan shillings from Kinyara per year which Kinyara remits to the Sub County every November noting that the money will reduce from 50 to 30 million Ugandan shillings.
