Five children from Kitengule Village in Pakanyi Sub-county Masindi District have died of suspected measles.
According to the area sub-county woman councillor, Margaret Kabaruli all the five children died on Saturday and were buried yesterday.
Kabaruli told www.mknewslink.com that all the five children who were below five years of age first developed red eyes, high temperature and skin rash before they died in three days.
Kabaruli asked the government to rescue the residents by conducting mass immunisation exercise in the area. She also asked men to support their wives in taking their children for immunisation adding that according to reports; many children in the area do not complete their immunisation schedules.
When contacted, the acting District Health Officer (DHO), Patrick Baguma acknowledged receipt of reports of the demise of the five children. However, he denied that all five children died on the same day saying they died in two days.
Baguma added that the cases were reported in Kitengule, Kitanyata andIpedi health centres. He blamed the disease outbreak in the area on parents who fail to take their children to health facilities for full immunisation against measles.
Baguma said he had already contacted the ministry of health to intervene and conduct mass immunisation. But, the acting DHO said he had already dispatched the necessary vaccines to health centres in the area to handle routine immunisation.
