Former Inspector General of Police Gen. Edward Kale Kayihura got a feel of what it’s like to be an inmate after spending his first night inside a detention cell at Makindye.
The disgraced General who was airlifted from his farm in rural Kashagama in Lyantonde to Kampala aboard a military chopper spent the night in detention.
In his statement, Brig Karemire said Kayihura was on Tuesday “asked to report to the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi at General Headquarters – Mbuya.”
The Defence spokesperson added: “A helicopter was subsequently dispatched to transport him from there but on arrival, Gen Kale had travelled to Mbarara and so it had to return to Entebbe Airforce Base.”
Eyewitnesses said they saw the chopper landing in the farm with several soldiers disembarking. They thought it had developed a mechanical problem. It appears Gen Mbadi, a former ADC of president Museveni, was on the phone with his superiors or regional commanders.
Mbadi stayed in the helicopter. The army had just picked information that Kayihura had left his farmhouse.
It remains unclear why Gen Kayihura abandoned his home yet he had received a message that he was wanted at Mbuya and a chopper would pick him the same day.
This could have raised concerns that Gen Kayihura intended to flee the country.
Elite military units were dispatched to search for Kayihura in the entire Lyantonde area. Road blocks were mounted along the major roads.
Security failed to trace Gen Kayihura hence raiding Court Yard International and Sky Blue Hotels. Rooms were turned upside down but Kayihura could not be traced.
On Wednesday morning, Kayihura, who was being chauffeured in an Ipsum Premio brand car got tired and slept on the roadside in Lake Mburo national park area.
Time check was 6:00pm.
Kale’s phones were found in a separate Premio brand car which raised fears that this could have been intended to hoodwink trackers.
The soldiers quickly alerted Brig Muhanga who said Gen Kayihura should be brought to him.
“I don’t want to embarrass you,” Kayanja reportedly told Kayihura. “Let’s go home so you can take a bath and rest.”
It’s understood Kayihura pleaded with Kayanja to allow him go. Kayanja stood his ground, saying he couldn’t do such a thing.
Kayihura would later take a bath and fall asleep.
A few hours later, a chopper was sent to pick him to Mbuya. After the grilling session, he was taken to Makindye where he spent first night in detention in the same facility with his police henchmen, Herbert Muhangi former Flying Squad, Richard Ndaboine former head cyber unit and Ndahura Atwoki former Crime Intelligence chief.
The four according to reports are to be questioned in relation to numerous crimes they committed while Kayihura was police chief.
At Makindye Kayihura will be sleeping in the proximity with Nixon Agasirwe, Abdallah Kitatta, Joel Aguma, Abdulnoor Ssemujju aka Minaana and other suspected criminals who at one time held powerful positions in the police force under Kayihura.
Kayihura’s home in Makindye has been taken over by the army and was searched last night.
It is said that the swoop to arrest more police officers is still ongoing and according to the source, most of those to be arrested are at the rank of commissioners of police.
Ordinarily, senior army officers like Kayihura are detained at the Kololo officers’ mess but the detention at Makindye military police could be pointing to a bigger case against the former police boss.
