FORT PORTAL: MPANGA BRIDGE COLLAPSE, RESIDENTS DEMONSTRATE

Residents in Fort portal municipality led by Boda Boda riders and school going children have set a peaceful demonstration following the Mpanga Bridge breakage that lead two people drown in River Mpanga.
According to residents, this week a pupil from Buhinga primary school was saved from drowning when the rotten timber on the bridge at Mpanga Market, fort portal Municipality Kabarole district broke; another woman last week also survived death on the same bridge when she was crossing.
However these were fortunately saved by nearby settlers, it has forced angry residents to protest against this bridge on verge whereby they went and bought nails and timbers and started repairing the bridge in a bid to protect people’s lives.
Speaking to www.mknewslink.com reporter, the Fort portal municipality town clerk Geoffrey Bamanyisa said that the bridge is not in the mandate of being renovated by the Municipality.
He noted that the Mpanga Bridge is a community bridge thus it’s the area chairperson LC1 to work upon it with the help town agent since every month are given 25% to work on such activities.
Silver Rwabwogo a Boda Boda Rider told our reporter that they have complained about the broken bridge to leaders but they have given them a deaf ear.
Jackson Bahati a resident accused the municipal leadership for failing to look after people’s lives sating that all the timbers are rotten.
Costa Douglas a student from Mpanga Senior secondary school also showed his concern saying that their lives are at risk since the now clear main bridge is narrow and used by bigger cars.
