A canter lorry carrying about fifty worshipers overturned killing three people on spot and injuring several others along Mbarara Ibanda road.
The worshipers were from attending an annual new dawn crusade at Yesu Ahurire community prayer center in Karama Mbarara district around 3:00 am before getting involved in a nasty accident at Kateebe primary school 10 miles away from mbarara town.
The injured victims who were heading to their respective homes in Buhweju district, were rushed to Mbarara regional referral hospital for treatment as relatives of the dead persons also pitched camp at the hospital mortuary awaiting for the postmortem of beloved ones.
Rwizi region police spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi confirmed the accident but faulted the driver of canter lorry registration no. UAY 517D for abandoning the main road and instead used a rough marrum one in an effort to evade police since the vehicle he was using to ferry people is not licensed to transport people.
Ssenkumbi said in the process the driver now on the run drove recklessly and lost control thus knocking the road pavement forcing the vehicle to overturn
Mbarara regional referral hospital director Dr. Celestine Barigye said majority of the victims brought in with fractures and head injuries are out of danger after the doctors at the hospital fully treated them
However the Buhweju MP Francis Mwijukye blamed the hospital administration for allegedly asking him to purchase a few items like gloves for the doctors to use in treating the victims and the three bodies.
He also faulted government for failure to improve on the road network in Buhweju in order to attract better means of transport in the area so as stop people from using tipper lorries to travel to different destinations within the district.
The area district chairperson tasked government to reprimand police from harassing people in the transport industry a reason he said forced the canter lorry driver to opt for a rough road in an attempt to dodge them but ended up in a horrible accident.
