In Kabale—
The parish Priest at Kitanga catholic Parish in Kabale Diocese Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda has lashed out at President Yoweri Museveni for downplaying the effect of early Pregnancies on School going Children.
In July this year, the president announced partial lifting of the lockdown due to COVID-19 in which he had closed down a section of activities in different sectors of the economy.
In his televised address held on 30th July 2021, Museveni re-opened some of the business sectors in order to prevent a possible collapse of the economy, but the education sector remained closed leaving up to 15 million students uncertain about the future of their education.
The government has up to now come out clear on the re- opening date.
In a video clip that has been making rounds on social media , Museveni is seen responding angrily to his critics on the continued closure of schools saying that it is better for the children to get pregnant than die of COVID-19.
Rev. Fr. Gaetano says Museveni’s words were insensitive to the plight of the young girls who get pregnant at an early age.
Fr. Gaetano also blasted Museveni for arguing that pregnancies don’t kill.
The priest noted that when a girl child gets pregnant, she experiences death psychologically, morally and spiritually, and sometimes physically for those who commit suicide or succumb to pregnancy related complications.
Fr. Gaetano also said that the children who are most exposed to defilement and early Pregnancies are usually the underprivileged girls from poor families where the men take advantage of their vulnerability.
Fr. Gaetano also reacted to the statement made by the Minister of Education Janet Kataha Museveni in which she called for patience and faith in the government in regard to the closure and re- opening of schools.
Fr. Gaetano said it was good that Minister Janet understands that Ugandans have lost trust in the Government.
He challenged the first lady to come out and give any reason to trust the government yet they have failed to live by their promises.
