In Kabale—
The Chairperson of the Interreligious Council of Kigezi Rev Fr. Gaetano
Batanyenda has asked Uganda’s Electoral Commission to disqualify NRM’s Presidential candidate Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni over voter bribery.
In November last year, the National Resistance Movement (NRM)
secretariat released at least sh24b for countrywide door-to-door
campaigns ahead of the 2021 general election.
The NRM secretary-general said each village branch will receive sh300,000, parish sh100,000, sub-county sh300,000, municipality/city division sh3m, district and city sh5m.
Last month, the NRM Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumuba said that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party will spend atleast Shs31.2b in facilitating campaigns for its flag bearers on parliamentary, city mayoral and LC5 seats ahead of the 2021 General
Election.
The party is also facilitating the campaigns for city councilors,
city division mayors and councilors, district councilors and LCIII
chairpersons and sub-county councils across the country.
Lumumba said the facilitation is meant to help candidates procure
campaign logistics and materials such as posters, fliers, transport,
mobile phone airtime and water for campaign task forces. The party has also reimbursed the nomination fees paid to the Electoral
Commission by flag bearers on each of the listed levels of leadership.
Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday at Kick Corruption out of Uganda offices in Kirigime ward Kabale municipality, Fr. Gaetano said that it’s unfortunate that the Electoral Commission has remained silent while the NRM government headed by President Museveni is publically bribing voters for election favors.
Fr. Gaetano said that the EC should prove its Independence to Ugandans
by questioning the NRM government, the source of its funding and
immediately disqualify President Museveni for bribing voters to vote
him on 14th this month to retain his seat as the President of Uganda.
