In Rukungiri—
Police has today been deployed at St Gerald’s secondary school Nyakibaale in Rukungiri District to quell a student’s strike.
The students who have spent barely three weeks at school were up in arms with the school’s deputy head teacher Timothy Twinomujuni and the school warden only identified as Oswald.
The school warden is charged with overseeing the boarding section of the school
Trouble began yesterday afternoon at 2:00pm when students attacked the residences of deputy head teacher and school warden accusing them of high handedness.
The students reportedly vandalized the houses of the said staff, collected all their property and heaped it the gate of the school.
The students claimed that the warden and the deputy headteacher have meted out harsh punishments to them even for what they consider small issues.
One of the students who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity said that some students are suspended for small infractions.
The headmaster of the school Nazarious Byaruhanga admitted that some students were suspended for indiscipline and ordered to report to school with their parents, but before dust could settle, senior 4 students, were engaged in a brawl with their senior 3 counterparts.
The Rukungiri District Police commander Musa Tibakirana told www.mknewslink.com that Police were called in to prevent students from destroying property of the deputy headmaster and school warden.
He said that a meeting between police, the head teacher and other stakeholders was held to chart out ways of restoring calm
Tibakirana called on students to concentrate on their studies and avoid criminality noting that one is criminally liable at the age of 12.
He said police are carrying out investigations to pick out the ringleaders so that they are charged for destroying property.
