In Mbarara—
The High Court has set November 10, 2026, for the delivery of a ruling in a case in which former Mbarara City North MP Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari is challenging the academic documents of the current MP, Christopher Bakashaaba.
Justice Tom Chemutai directed that the ruling will be delivered electronically through the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECCMIS), following the completion of cross-examination of witnesses presented by both parties.
The judge also directed lawyers representing the two sides to file their written submissions electronically through ECCMIS.
Lawyers for the applicant, led by Able Kanduuho, were given up to October 16, 2026, to file their submissions, while Bakashaaba’s legal team, led by Counsel Edgar Ayebazibwe, was given until October 23, 2026, to submit their written submissions.
Bakashaaba, who contested on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, was declared the winner of the Mbarara City North parliamentary election with 5,478 votes, defeating Rukaari, who garnered 4,802 votes.
Other candidates included Benon Kajubi, who received 4,225 votes; PFF’s Agatha Atusasire with 1,738 votes; Peter Mpaka with 481; Moses Nuwagaba with 182; independent candidate Nassulu Karungi with 136; and Democratic Forces (DF) candidate Mubaraka Bukenya, who obtained 45 votes.
The ruling is expected to determine the next stage of the legal dispute over Bakashaaba’s election and the academic qualifications being challenged by Rukaari.
