The National Resistance Movement-NRM Electoral Commission has suspended the party primaries for the Hoima district Woman Parliamentary race.
NRM party primaries are set to be held on September 4, 2020, across the country.
According to the letter dated 22nd August 2020, the chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission Dr Tanga Odoi decided to suspend campaigns and the elections after sparks of violence between supporters of the area MP Harriet Businge and her main challenger Beatrice Wembabazi.
Wembabazi was allegedly attacked by Businge’s driver Henry Gama at Kiryatete village in Kigorobya Sub County on 19th August while returning from Lunga landing site where she had gone to consult voters when Gama blocked the road, stopping Wembabazi from crossing through.
The aspirant who is still at Mulago hospital sustained severe injuries on the head, chest and stomach while the driver Julius Birungi sustained injuries on the head.
Odoi says his office cannot allow elections to continue when one of the candidates is in critical condition.
He says his office is investigating the matter and will come up with a final decision.
Our efforts to speak to incumbent Businge have been futile as she kept making our repeated calls busy.
