A Chinese national working for China Railway NO-5 Engineering Group, a
Chinese construction company contracted to tarmac the
Kigumba-Masindi-Hoima-Kabwoya road has been arrested for allegedly
assaulting a worker.
The suspect has been only identified as Mr. Wang, a grader supervisor
at their construction camp in Buhimba town council, Hoima district.
Mr. Wang allegedly assaulted and injured one Darius Tuhimbise, a
grader operator who is currently admitted at City Medical clinic in
Hoima town.
John Stephen Ekoom, the Hoima Resident District Commissioner confirmed the
arrest saying that the suspect was picked during a security meeting convened at their camp after reports of increased harassment and illegal detention of their workers.
However, Mr. Wang who is being detained at Hoima police station says they were
playing with the victim when he mistakenly kicked him badly.
Mr. Kadir Kirungi, Hoima district LC5 chairman says such elements are likely to affect the project funding. He adds that they would not hesitate to petition Uganda National Roads Authority Executive Director to cancel the contract if the contractors don’t stop mistreating their employees.
In 2015, World Bank suspended funding for some road projects over reports of sexual harassment of female employees. China Railway No5 group was contracted by government to upgrade the 135km road of the Kigumba-Bulima-Kabwoya.
