Hoima police are detaining Derrick Oyergiu, 28, a resident of Kaiso landing site in Kabale sub-county, for allegedly killing his six-month-old child. Oyergiu allegedly had a dispute with his wife, Esther Tumaine on Friday last week for unknown reasons.
During the altercation, he took their six-month-old son and disappeared with him to an undisclosed location. Following the incident, Tumaine reported the matter to the police, prompting them to launch an investigation and search for the suspect.
Oyergiu was apprehended on Sunday. However, by the time of his arrest, he had already killed the child and disposed of the body in a nearby bush. He later led detectives to the scene where he had murdered and abandoned the baby. The lifeless body of the child exhibited severe cuts on the neck, chest, and head. Police transported the body to Hoima city mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, says the suspect is in custody at Hoima central police station and will face charges in court accordingly.
