In WASHINGTON DC –
Kyadondo East Legislator Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has revealed that he will return to Uganda from the United States on Thursday, September 20, but said that he is afraid about the reception he will receive from the Kampala authorities.
In an interview with South Africa’s Mail & Guardian on Sunday, Bobi Wine, who has for the last two weeks been in the US for medical checks following arrest and torture in the Arua election chaos, said history has shown that many freedom fighters have in the past been arrested on arrival in the country.
“I’ll be going back home on Monday. Of course, I’m worried, but that’s my home, that’s where my family is, that’s where all my people are,” he said.
“You can expect anything from Uganda. Because looking back in history many freedom fighters have been rudely arrested upon arrivals and I am not any different, so there is anything to expect,” he added.
On October 3, 2016, Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye was arrested at Entebbe International Airport moments after he landed. This was in connection with declaring himself the president after a private swearing-in ceremony organised by his supporters.
Dr Besigye arrived at Entebbe Airport at around 8:15 am and was reportedly immediately whisked away by security officers to an unknown destination.
On Tuesday, September 11, police and army officers stormed the venue of the meeting intended to organize the return of Bobi Wine in Kamwokya, Kampala, and confiscated their materials and arrested one of the organisers. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the meeting was illegal.
While in the US, Bobi Wine has addressed a press conference, been interviewed by international news channels BBC, Aljazeera, VOA and CNN. VOA’s Straight Talk Africa program last week featured the legislator and Ugandan Ambassador to the United States Mull Sebujja Katende.
He is expected to return after attending a panel discussion at George Washington University on Monday.
