IBANDA CHAIRMAN LCII ARRESTED FOR PROTECTING WETLAND ENCROACHERS

The chairperson LC 11, Nyakatookye central cell in Kagongo division, Ibanda municipality George Rugarwana was today arrested by the leaders of the district for allegedly protecting encroachers who have destroyed wetlands and swamps in his area.
Ibanda district Environment Officer,Tom Nuwagira told www.mknewslink.com that George Rugarwana was arrested today by officials from the district who handed him to police.
He added that Rugarwana will be taken to court to answer to charges labeled against him.
Mr. Nuwagira disclosed that environmental staff have expressed
concern over the increasing rate of wetland and swamps encroachment especially in Nyakatookye, Nyabuhikye, Kabobo, Kigunga,Katehe.
The rich people have encroached the wetlands by planting eucalyptus trees ,growing crops like cabbage, tomatoes, millet,beans, water melon to mention a few .If no steps are taken all wetlands will be destroyed and the story becomes history.Nuwagira said.
He was accompanied by police, Local council officials and district councilors from the areas in the divisions of Kagongo,Bisheeshe and Bufunda in Ibanda municipality.
