IBANDA FIRST AFRICAN COLLEGE PRINCIPAL JOSEPH BYANYIMA LAID TO REST

Mzee Joseph Byanyima, the first African principal at St. George’s Core Teachers’ Training College in Ibanda district has been laid to rest.
The body of the talented educationist and noble gentleman was laid to rest yesterday at his home in Nyakateete 111 cell, Kigarama ward, Bisheeshe division in Ibanda municipality council y.
Joseph Byanyima, 96, a veteran educationist lost the battle to abdominal cancer at the Institute of cancer, Mulago hospital on Monday after six years of suffering.
The Archbishop of Mbarara Diocese, Most. Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha, told the mourners that Joseph Byanyima was in 1971 appointed the first African principal at St. George’s Core Teachers’ college after serving for only six months as a deputy principal.
“Joseph Byanyima replaced Fr. Rev. Toola, of the White fathers Missionaries in Uganda when he retired. He contributed much towards the improvement of education and many teachers in Western Region and the country benefited from his tenure,” the archbishop noted
Joseph Byanyima specialized in English speaking, training; English grammar and psychology.
One of his closest friend, Muzee Michael Rwandakeye described the late Byanyima as a man who has dedicated his home in Nyakateete III cell a venue for church services despite the affiliation, be it; Anglican, Catholic, Moslems or Born again.
Speaker after speaker praised Byanyima as a true man who lived to witness the fruits of his hard work by encouraging many people to train as teachers.
Mzee Joseph Byanyima was born on 25th August 1925 at Bitsya village in current Buhweju district. He attended Kitebi secondary school in 1944. St. George’s Teacher training center in Ibanda district.
He pursued Cambridge school certificate course, then a junior secondary school teacher certificate course at St. Aloysius College Ngora.
He served on Mbarara District service Commission, Mbarara District Teaching service committee, Chairman Urban tender board for Ibanda Town Council and the Chairman of Ibanda Hospital Board as a member.
