IBANDA POLICE ARREST 64 JUVENILES SUSPECTED TO BE ROBBERS, PETTY THIEVES

Police in Ibanda district, yesterday arrested 64 juvenile suspected to be robbers, attending films halls, matatu players, marijuana smokers and conmen who have been terrorizing residents of Ibanda municipality. Others who were rounded up included school children who are in holidays including a mother aged 35 with three children.
Of recent, there have been a spate of theft and attackers targeting business persons, particularly the travelers from markets, mobile money dealers and people passing in black spots.
The District Police Commander, Ibanda, Mr. Denis Ochaama who led the operation, yesterday
said that he received intelligence reports from crime preventers ,residents and local council
Leaders that juvenile had been attacking many villages especially Katooma, Omukensi
Roma, Kigarama,Kitwe,Kyaruhanga and Bufunda cells all in Ibanda municipality where
the high rate of crimes had been registered.
The reports indicated that some youth including boys and girls are terrorizing people using iron
bars, pangas,some grab women’s bags and steal their money and also ambush people who
draw the money from ATM.
Mr. Ochama said that all people who were arrested from their hide outs were taken to
Ibanda central police cells for interrogation.
According to police, some juvenile who have been re-arrested during the previous operation
are now in police cells. “The law is clear any suspect arrested is a suspect until
Court proves him or her guilty. We are mandated by law to arrest such criminals who have
become a threat and we should find ways to fight it and prevent it from recurring in Ibanda
district” Mr. Ochama said.
The LC officials told the wwww.mknewslink.com a western Uganda news website that some criminals have been using public toilets as a
place where to sleep at night, while others sleep in discos, film halls and in poor drainages.
Mr. Ochama has advised parents to get time at night and talk with their children about their
future and get solutions of solving the problems met by their children. He said that many
children watch the TV screens and end up trying to put into practice what they have seen and
persuade their friends to join them in wrong places and wrong acts.
