IBANDA WATER METRES VANDALIZED

The management of National water and Sewerage Corporation in Ibanda municipality has threatened to arrest intruders who have vandalized water meters through theft.
The area manager, Ms. Kathryn Mwereere has told www.mknewslink.com to day that one hundred water meters in Ibanda municipality have been reportedly vandalized and stolen in four months by suspected intruders, causing loss of business.
“This causes National water and sewerage to lose the valuable water meters valued at millions of shillings from our customers “ Ms. Mwereere said.
She asked for the joint monitoring from the offices of the Resident District Commissioner, Police, local councils and clients to ensure that all communities step up with strong arms.
She warned that the vandalism of water metres could also potentially lead to the outbreak of diseases such as dysentery and others as major challenge of overflowing of water in many places where it is stagnant.
Ms. Mwereere requested all customers to be cautioned and guard their water meters jealously adding that the move would help to track criminals. “ We must work together to avail information that can help to track such intruders” She said.
Therefore, the lost water meters through theft have caused panic among the customers following armed robbery carrying pangas at night by removing the meters. The customers who talked to www.mknewslink.com said they suspect the intruders are selling them to people who buy scraps while moving with weighing scale collecting the scraps.
The residents mainly affected are from Kyaruhanga,Bufunda,Kigarama and Kagongo areas and have asked their local leaders to registers visitors strategy to net criminals in the areas. The residents also complained that they have lost valuable items such as saucepans, pangas, hoes, axes and wheel barrows.
