The District Natural Resource Officer, Ibanda,Erry Kirya has disclosed that there are estimated 8,000 illegal miners who are operating the business.
Kirya noted that the district continues to lose a lot of resources due to illegal miners
Kirya said that out of these mushrooming illegal mining companies only Simba Miners Limited has procured a license to cover 53 sq.Km.
He noted that Simba has a licence to mine gold around Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve in Kicuzi sub county, Ibanda district..
Many children around Kicuzi Sub County have dropped out of schools and are mining gold especially in the areas of Kitaka, Irimya and kanywambogo villages which has increased illiteracy, Kirya noted.
This mining is also becoming a health threat as they lack toilet facilities, and clean water for drinking.
