Over four acres of banana plantations have been cut down and two houses destroyed in Kyeinamu village, Rushasha sub county Isingiro district.
A cross section of area residents destroyed the properties following a disagreement that erupted soon after participating in the local council one election which NRM flag bearer one Kagina Moses lost. The destroyed property belonged to him and three of his agents.
Kagina lost to Betumaho Livingstone (independent) and immediately after declaration of results he grabbed a walking stick from one of the voters and used it to hit Bangowabo Fransisco on the fore head before a police officer deployed at Kyeinamu polling station shot in the air to disperse the crowd and calm the situation. His supporters also hit one Ahimbisibwe Denis with a glass and shuttered his head.
The victim who is now admitted at Mbarara region Referral hospital had earlier on de-campaigned Kagina Moses.
Later in the night the angry residents in an act of revenge descended on Kagina’s house, pulled it down and burnt another belonging to his agent. The residents also cut down his banana plantation and those of his two other agents.
Isingiro District Police Commander Erimu Richard said that the perpetrators escaped from the village and that police investigations are underway.
Area RDC Herbert Muhangi noted that poor road network made it difficult for police to reach the scene of crime on time and arrest culprits. He further said that the limited number of police officers in the district also frustrated their deployment plan to have two or more police officers deployed at each polling station to avert such kind of election violence.
