The NRM flag bearer Kashari north Mbarara district Basil Bataringaya has revealed that it is one’s political right to stand for any political position on any party of his choice as long as he or she qualifies.
He added that one has a right to stand as an independent even if he or she participated in any party’s primary elections.
Speaking on the air waves of Croozefm Mbarara ,Bataringaya however noted that any person who was defeated in party elections and decided to stand as an independent should not be treated as a member of that particular party.
His comment comes after the National Resistance Movement party Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba said that starting tomorrow; the party will begin holding talks with its members who were defeated in party primaries but opted to be nominated as independent parliamentary candidates.
It should be noted that most of the candidates who were defeated in party primaries decided to stand as independent claiming the elections were not fair citing out violence and vote rigging.
Ugandans have watched some NRM chairpersons like Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, cadres like Prof. Kabwegyere and founders of FDC like Ingrid Turinawe contest as independent candidates.
