Police in Ntungamo yesterday arrested a journalist after he took a picture of a female traffic officer receiving a bribe from a motorist at Nyakihanga along Ntungamo Mbarara road.
Mr. Asaph Bindiire a freelance journalist with Vision group was arrested from Nyakihanga and driven in a car he was travelling in on handcuffs up to Ntungamo police station where he was detained before being given police bond in the evening.
Mr. Bindire was charged with an offense of driving with no driving permit yet he says was not driving the Toyota Premio vehicle that also had other three journalists and a student. Following his release, Mr. Bindire said he was under duress to write and sign a statement that he was driving the car belonging to a fellow, Robert Aturinda who was also in the vehicle and told us that he would be arrested again and taken to court if any story was published on the incident.
The Ntungamo traffic and road safety officer Mr. Kazimoto Emilio said journalists were simply distracting police who are doing their role.
